Nietzsche: he who has the why to live for can bear almost any how
Three possible sources for meaning:
Love (caring for another person)
Work (doing something significant)
Courage during difficult times
We give our suffering meaning by the way in which we respond to it
A person may remain brave, dignified, and unselfish, or in the bitter fight for self preservation he may forget his human dignity and become no more than an animal
Forces beyond your control can take away everything you possess except one thing, your freedom to choose how you will respond to the situation
The man, whose self esteem had always depended on the respect of others, is emptionally destroyed
We have come to know man as he really is. After all, man is that being whi invented the gas chamber of Auschwitz; however, he is also that being who entered those gas chambers upright, with the Lord’s prayer or the Shema Yisrael on his lips
We can endure things more than we think we are capable of. We can eat very little and still be alive, not brushing our teeth and keep healthy
It’s the kindness we do when we are suffering that defines us as a man
The salvation of man is through love and in love

Any man can under such circumstances, decide what shall become of him, mentally and spiritually. He may reatin his human dignity even in a concentration camp

Difficult external situation gives man the opportunity to grow spiritually beyond himself
